Personal Bio Hi my name's Alaina Maren Dressman and I'm a first year student here at UC working on my major in Early Childhood Education. I spent most of my life living in Boone County KY but moved to a little town called Wyoming, OH my junior year of high school. What can I say about myself... I suppose I'll start off with the typical cliche' facts. I love art but my life pretty much revolves around music. Although I don't play any instruments, I have such a passion for all types of music, The Beatles being my all time favorite band and pretty much my reason for living. I was even able to see Paul McCartney live in concert last year and I can say now that my life is complete. Other than my adoration for all things music, I also enjoy writing and literature with a special focus on poetry. When I'm not writing poems, I'm taking pictures or watching movies with my amazing boyfriend Ricky. I find both activities such a beautiful way to portray ideas and emotions. I tend to focus a lot on the artistic side of things. Some of my photography can be seen on the link below http://www.flickr.com/photos/alainadressman
So besides the hobbies I mentioned, other somewhat unimportant info about me would include the fact that I am extremely clumsy, I have short term memory loss from a recent car accident, and I have 2 fish named Wallace and Bernie. R.I.P Alfred who is recently deceased as of new years.
Professional Goals All my life, I've had a love for working with young children. I've tried a few different avenues such as social work and nursing but I'm pretty sure that teaching is the right path for me. This semester I've had the opportunity to take part in a field experience in a preschool classroom at the Arlitt Child and Family Research Center on campus. http://cech.uc.edu/centers/arlitt.html After taking part in such a wonderful experience, I know that I would absolutely love to have my own pre-school or kindergarten classroom hence why I am in the major or early childhood education. No matter what I end up doing with my life, I just want to help kids.
Goals for the Course I have been told that I am technologically inept. After having to work so much with computers this year in college, I have finally come to accept this fact about me. Through this course, I would love to learn how to navigate my way through a computer with ease and to gain an appreciation for technology and how useful it can be in a classroom.
This project correlates to the third standard because by informing the different barriers when using an iPad in the classroom, I modeled and facilitated the effective use of current and emerging digital tools to support learning/teaching. This Prezi can be a useful tool in the classroom because it helps to explain to the students possible problems that could arise when using an iPad in the classroom. It also helps to introduce the usefulness of using technology for certain projects. 2. Lemonade Stand math game: http://www.coolmath-games.com/lemonade
It simulates a child's lemonade stand, where choices made by the player regarding prices, advertising, etc. will determine the success or failure of the business. The player is first given a weather report for the day (sunny, cloudy or hot and dry) and is asked to pick three values: The number of glasses of lemonade to make, the number of advertising signs, and the cost of lemonade per glass. The program then gives a report of the earnings for that day. A thunderstorm, sometimes occurring on cloudy days will void any profits and cause the player to lose any investment for the day. The game can be played either single-player or with up to 30 players.
I believe this game relates directly back to standard number one: Facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity. It faces the students with a real world problem in a face to face virtual environment.
I believe this Lemonade Stand game can enhance my classroom by creating a fun way to count money, budget, and educate on how to run a business.
3. Why I want to be a teacher:
This video relates back to standard five because it truly shows my passion for teaching while also demonstrating and promoting the effective use of digital tools and resources when it comes to the field of education.
I think this video could be applied to my experience in the classroom because it will allow my students and their parents to see how passionate I am about education. Every parent would love to know that the person teaching their child is dedicated and hardworking.
4. Fair Use Photovisi Project This collage contains some of Andy Warhol's pop art. It was created to portray the idea of fair use when it comes to using images on the internet. Although Warhol used name brands and copyrighted images in his artwork, it is not considered stealing because he altered the images to create his own understanding of the original. Therefore, Warhol would not get in trouble for using the specific images.
This relates to the fourth standard because it promotes informed decision making when it comes to incorporating images in classroom projects. The collage will be helpful when I'm teaching in my future classroom because it will always remind me to teach my students the appropriate way to use images from the internet, a topic many teachers don't touch on.
The following portfolio rubric that I created is supported by standard 2 because its an example of a form of assessment aligned with content and technology standards. This can be applied to the classroom because it is the first of many rubrics that I will end up creating in my education career.
